Thousands take part in the Inaugural Kabalega Independence Run 2023

On October 7, 2023, Hoima Booma Grounds became the epicenter of a momentous celebration as the Kabalega Independence Run 2023 took place. The event was particularly significant, as one of the key events held of the year-long commemoration to mark 100 years since the passing of Omukama Cwa II Kabalega. Themed “Run to Celebrate a Hero’s Legacy, Run to Educate a Leader of Tomorrow,” the run honored the legacy of one of Bunyoro-Kitara’s most revered leaders while also focusing on nurturing the the establishment of Kabalega Education Fund, through which the organizers, Kabalega Foundation aim to nature and support next generation of leaders through education support.

Omukama Cwa II Kabalega, who ruled Bunyoro-Kitara from 1870 to 1899, is celebrated for his formidable leadership and his efforts to protect his kingdom from colonial forces. His reign was marked by resilience, strategic brilliance, and a profound dedication to his people and their cultural heritage. As part of the year-long centennial commemoration, the Kabalega Independence Run served as a tribute to his enduring legacy and his impact on the history of not only Bunyoro-Kitara, but also Uganda, and the entire African race in their quest for independence.

The event attracted participants from across the nation, all united in their admiration for Kabalega’s contributions. Runners took to the track to honor his memory, reflecting on his courage and the values he stood for. Educating Tomorrow’s Leaders

In alignment with the event’s theme, “Run to Educate a Leader of Tomorrow,” the Kabalega Independence Run 2023 also placed a significant emphasis on fostering leadership and providing educational opportunities for young people. This focus highlighted the importance of investing in future generations and preparing them to take on leadership roles within their communities as per the target of the run, to establish Kabalega Education Fund.

Key Target Initiatives of the Kabalega Education Fund:
  • Community Skills Development: The fund aims to support community skill development through imparting practical skills to enhance social livelihoods, foster growth of community micro-enterprises, and increase the employability chances for members of the community, with special emphasis and attention on youth, women, and persons with disabilities.
  • Scholarship Fund Establishment: A a long term objective, the fund through continued mobilization of resources aims to establish scholarships for students demonstrating leadership potential. The focus of these scholarships will be to support their educational pursuits and help them achieve their goals, ensuring that future leaders have the capacity development they need to succeed.
  • Education & Life Skills Development: The fund aims to support educational infrastructural development that will support education infrastructure development, and facilitation of skills development for community members as a profession and source of livelihood.
Event Highlights
  • Diverse Race Categories: The Kabalega Independence Run 2023 featured a range of race categories, including 5 Kilometer, and 10 Kilometer distances, accommodating runners of various abilities. The diverse options allowed for broad participation and engagement from both seasoned athletes and casual runners.
  • Blood Donation Drive: In partnership with Uganda Blood Transfusion Services, the event featured blood donation drive where more than 250 blood donations were received, with these towards saving lives of those in need of blood.
  • Exhibition: The event featured an exhibition where organisations, businesses, and community enterprises got a chance to showcase their services and products to the community.
  • Community Engagement: With speeches from leaders at various levels, the run fostered a strong sense of community, bringing together individuals from different backgrounds to celebrate a shared heritage and invest in the future. The collective spirit of the event underscored the importance of unity and collaboration in achieving common goals.
